*People with asterisks after their names were married two or more times.  They have a separate line for each spouse.

This is “my” branch of the Pappenheim extended family.  The Sorauer family most likely originated in the town of Zory, or Sohrau in German, which was part of the German region of Silesia, and is now in western Poland, close to the German border.

One of the daughters of Pinkus Mühsam (see PAPPENHEIM/MÜHSAM page) was Pesse, who married Jacob Sorauer, a brewery owner.  The Sorauer family lived in the cities of Beuthen and Breslau in Silesia, Germany (see MAP).  Beuthen now goes by its Polish name of Bytom, and Breslau goes by Wroclaw.  Both now lie in southwest Poland.

One book on the Jews of Germany writes, “This resulted in the emergence of a number of local Jewish dynasties, such as ... the Sorauer and Guttmann families in Beuthen (Upper Silesia), ...”

The earliest couple I have identified in the family are Marcus and Neime Sorauer.  Neime (also known as Nanny), must have been especially loved; in the four years after her death in 1833, three of her great-granddaughters were given the name Nanny Sorauer. One of these is my great-great-grandmother. Her schoolbook of essays is in the exhibit of the Jewish Museum of Berlin (shown at right).

One of the other three Nanny Sorauers had a daughter, Martha Wygodzinski, who became very admired for her work among poor women in Berlin. She was one of the very first female physicians in Berlin (she was one of only eight), and the first one to be admitted to the Berlin Medical Society. She had studied medicine in Switzerland because there were no German medical schools that would accept women. Although coming from a prosperous family, she chose to focus on treating the poor, especially poor women. She worked in the poorest working class districts of Berlin and became known as the “Engel der Armen” (the “Angel of the Poor”). She founded a women’s medical clinic in the Pankow district of Berlin as well as a home for unwed mothers. Wygodzinski was a member of the Socialist party (SPD) and became a member of the Berlin City Council in the 1920’s. Around 1936 the Nazis revoked her medical license, and in 1942, at the age of 73, she was deported to the concentration camp Theresienstadt, where she died of weakness and starvation in February 1943.

Thanks to Cary Aufseeser (a descendant of still another Nanny Sorauer) for assembling much of this information, including finding the connection between our respective Nanny Sorauer great-great-grandmothers.  Other information comes from the book “Geschichte des Namens Mühsam” (History of the Name Mühsam), written by Siegfried Mühsam in 1912. Information on the descendants of Regina Sorauer and Alexander Mohr was assembled by the faculty and students of the Wasagasse Gymnasium (high school) in Vienna. Thanks to Jim Falk and his Genealogy/Metastudies site for information on the Cassirer and Wachsmann families.
