Baer family

Made on a Mac

Nassau is a very small town in the mountains of western Germany with a population of about 5,000 (see MAP).  Yet despite it’s small size, it has had a major impact. Places ranging from Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, to Nassau County, New York, as well as the former German state of Nassau all have its name.  The royal families of both the Netherlands and of Luxembourg are named Nassau.  It has had this influence due to being the site of the castle of Nassau (built in 1125), which was the seat of the family of the Counts of Nassau, and later the Dukes of Nassau.  As that family’s power grew, their territory grew.  The former Duchy of Nassau, which included the city of Wiesbaden, was ruled by them, and the current royal houses of the Netherlands and Luxembourg are their descendants.

Another family with ancestors in the town of Nassau is the Baer (or Bär) family.  My branch of the Baer family is descended from Michael Bär and Babet Levi who married in 1845.  Michael and Babet were first cousins, and both are descended from Löw and Michele Israel from Nassau. Löw and Michele’s daughter, Frommet, married Rabbi Seligmann Levi.  Frommet and Seligmann Levi’s gravestones are still visible in Nassau’s Jewish cemetery, and are shown on the right.  Michael Bär and Babet Levi were both grandchildren of Frommet and Seligmann Levi.  This part of the family is shown in the first listing below (“Nassau family”).

Michael Bär was also descended from Isaak Gumpel and Eva Samuel and their son Isaak who took the family name Bär.  That part of the family had its origins in Wiesbaden and is shown in the second listing below (“Wiesbaden family”). They lived in Wiesbaden as early as the late 1700’s, when the city had a population of only about 2,000 inhabitants.

German Jews in the 18th century and earlier were limited in the types of work they could do.  They were prohibited from owning land, so few were farmers, and the guilds kept them out of most crafts.  They also were often prohibited from owning shops. The result was that many of them became itinerant traders, walking from farm to farm, village to village, selling and buying.  Others lent money, which the church forbade Christians from doing.  Later the Jews were allowed to open shops, and many of these itinerant traders became shopkeepers.  All of the major German department stores grew out of these small Jewish owned shops.

Many of the Bär ancestors from Nassau were cattle dealers.  Several of the Wiesbaden Bärs were in the clothing and fabric businesses.  Michael Bär was somewhat of an entrepreneur: he had a clothing store in Wiesbaden, then after his wedding he moved to Nassau where he opened a distillery and pub. He and his wife Babet had thirteen children, five of them died as children. They later moved back to Wiesbaden.

One of Michael and Babet’s grandchildren was Emilie BAER (1876 - 1944), photo at right (my great-grandmother).  She married Siegfried BAUM from Wiesbaden.  Siegfried and his brother owned a large children’s clothing store in Wiesbaden. After the brothers died, the store was run by Emilie and her daughter and son-in-law, until it was destroyed on Kristallnacht in 1938. More about the BAUM family can be found HERE.  Emilie was deported to the concentration camp Theresienstadt in 1942.  A day or two before she was to be deported to Auschwitz, in May 1944, she died, possibly by her own hand.  The purpose of the deportation to Auschwitz that she was scheduled to be on was to decrease the extreme overcrowding in Theresienstadt as part of the efforts of the Nazis to make Theresienstadt more presentable in preparation for the now infamous visit by the Danish Red Cross in June of 1944. For that visit the Nazis “cleaned up” Theresienstadt, putting in playgrounds, cafés, gardens, bringing in food and new clothes.  After the Danes, properly fooled, left, the camp returned to its previous horrendous conditions (e.g. people dying in the streets from starvation) and the deportations to Auschwitz resumed.

In the list below, names in RED are people who were murdered during the period 1933-1945.

Most of the information on the Nassau families on this page came from the book, “Julius Israel Nassau” by Waltraud Becker-Hammerstein and Werner Becker (see the bottom of this page for more about the book), with additional information supplied by Doris Spormann about the Isidor family.  Information on the early Wiesbaden Bärs came from Wolfgang Fritzsche.  Many thanks also to Jim Aronson, George Florsheim, Clotilde Wimmer, and Sherry Klein for sharing information on their branches of the family.

Throughout Germany people have become interested in the history and fate of the Jews from their towns.  In many places people have written books or articles on the history of the Jews of a particular place.  The best of these that I have seen is “Julius Israel Nassau, Juden in einer ländlichen Kleinstadt im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert” (Julius Israel Nasssau, Jews in a small rural town in the 19th and 20th centuries) about the Jews in the town of Nassau. A lot of the information on this page comes from that book.  It was written by Waltraud Becker-Hammerstein and Werner Becker and published in 2002.  If you are interested in the town of Nassau, and can read German, I highly recommend it.
