Jean-Jaques Servan-Schreiber was a journalist, author, and politician.  He founded the news magazine, L’Express, in 1953. As an author he is probably best known for Le Défi Américain (The American Challenge) and the 1980 follow-up Le Défi Mondial. He called for greater Europe cooperation in order to defend itself from the challenge of American economic power. Le Défi Américain was the best selling French book since World War II. Later in life he entered politics as a candidate of the Radical Party and was elected a deputy from Nancy. He has been described as one of the chief architects of Valéry-Giscard d’Estaing’s victorious presidential campaign of 1974 and was rewarded with a seat in the cabinet as Minister of Reforms. He was ousted from that position due to his opposition to French nuclear testing. In later years he was an advisor to Francois Mitterand as well as being on the faculty of Carnegie Mellon University. Valentin (Falk) Pappenheim went by the name of Valentin Seligmann before the adoption of family names. For an overview of the PAPPENHEIM and MÜHSAM families, see THIS PAGE, which includes links to all the other PAPPENHEIM and MÜHSAM descendant pages.  More PAPPENHEIMS  can be found on the PAPPENHEIM I and PAPPENHEIM II pages.

Seligmann Pappenheim had five sons, including Valentin.  Much of the data that I have on the Pappenheim family comes from a book entitled, “Geschichte des Namens Mühsam” (History of the Name Mühsam), written by Siegfried Mühsam in 1912. Mühsam does not mention Valentin in his book, only the other four sons, but there is good evidence indicating that Valentin was a son of Seligman Pappenheim.

One branch of Valentin’s descendants, the SCHREIBER family, went to France, becoming very prominent in French media and politics.

Most of the information on this page came from Roger Lustig, a genealogist focusing on German Jewish genealogy who is a coordinator of the German special interest group at Jewishgen.org. Roger established the connection between Valentin and the other Pappenheims, as well as finding the majority of the descendants listed below. Thanks also to Michael Liebert for additional information.
