Eisenstädt (“Iron City”) is a city at the very eastern end of Austria; it was formerly part of Hungary.  It had a significant Jewish population and produced several important rabbis.  There are many families named in some variation after the city (Eisenstädt, Aisenstadt, Ajzensztadt) throughout eastern Europe. These families all probably had a connection to the city, either being from there originally, or having lived there at some point.  My Eisenstädt family (also spelled Eisenstaedt, and later Eisenstadt) originated in the town of Schöneck (Skarszewy in Polish), which is a bit southwest of Danzig (Gdansk), in what was West Prussia, and is now part of Poland.  Previous to the early 1800’s, Jews generally did not use family names, rather they used the name of their father as their second name.  When Jews of the region of West Prussia were required to take family names in 1812, there were five brothers living in the town of Schöneck who took the name Eisenstadt: Moses, Arndt, Joseph, Jacob, and Schleimer, who were all sons of Benjamin. A few years later (1820’s) there were at least five Eisenstadt men and one woman living in Schöneck or towns close to it: a Joseph and a Solomon Eisenstadt in the Stuhm (now Sztum ) area, Joseph, Marcus, and Therese in Dirschau, and Siegfried who was still in Schöneck.  Siegfried’s son Benjamin moved to Putzig (now Puck), a bit north of Danzig. Stuhm is about 40 km from Schöneck; Dirschau (now Tczew) is even closer.  Based on the fact that the 1812 list would have only included adult men, and that the six Eisenstadts (Joseph, Solomon, Joseph, Marcus, Siegfried, Therese) found in the 1820’s didn’t start to have children until the mid 1820‘s, it is probable that they were all cousins, sons of the five “original” Eisenstadt brothers from the 1812 list.  For most of the cousins I know which of the five brothers was their father. However, for a few I don’t; they are listed below under “(Unknown) EISENSTÄDT”.  Most of the cousins had numerous children, as shown below.

The Eisenstädts in the Stuhm region lived in several towns and villages, all within about 10 km of each other.  All of the places had German names, but now have Polish names, having become part of Poland after WWII.  The names of the places in German and Polish are: Stuhm = Sztum, Neumarkt = Nowy Targ, Altmarkt = Stary Targ, Nikolaiken (or Nicolaskirchen) = Mikolajki Pomarskie.

The Eisenstädts followed the pattern of other Jewish families in the 1800’s: starting out in small villages, moving from one to another for marriage or economic reasons, but by the end of the century migrating to the large cities, especially Berlin. For example Putzig, one of the towns the Eisenstädts lived in, went from a Jewish population of about 100 in 1818 to a high of 178 people in 1849, but by 1913 had a Jewish population of only 39.

A famous member of the Eisenstädt family is the photographer, Alfred Eisenstaedt. He was born in Dirschau (now Tczew).  My Eisenstadt relatives remember him as being part of the extended family in Berlin before WWII.  Born in 1898, Alfred Eisenstaedt got his first camera at the age of 14 and sold his first photo in 1927.  He came to the U.S. in 1935 to escape Nazi Germany and was hired as one of the three original photographers for LIFE magazine, where he continued to work until his death in 1995.  He is considered to be the “father of modern photojournalism” with its emphasis on spontaneous shots capturing a specific moment in time, using small portable cameras, as opposed to the formal staged photographs that had been the standard previously. His most famous photograph is “VJ Day” shown at right.

Much of the information on this page I collected myself from birth, marriage, and death records assembled by the LDS (Mormon) church. Other information came from the memory of my mother, Susanne Kester (formerly Luft). Her mother, Edith Eisenstadt, is shown at right, below. Additional information came from Fred Zimmak, Jim Bennett, Simon Srebrny, and from the Cohn/Carter family. Thank you to the descendants of Hermann Eisenstädt for information on the Putzig branch of the family.

Edith Eisenstädt

(my grandmother)

7 June 1896, Berlin -

February 1943, Auschwitz

Benjamin (before about 1745 - about 1807, Schöneck)

  1. Benjamin would have had the name of his father as his second name, however we do not know what that was.  In the naming list of 1812,

  2. five sons of Benjamin are listed. Benjamin himself is not listed, indicating that he was no longer living. It was traditional to name children

  3. after deceased grandparents. The first grandchild named Benjamin was born in 1808, indicating that Benjamin (the grandfather) died in

  4. about 1807.

  5. -  Moses EISENSTÄDT (was Moses BENJAMIN before 1812) (about 1771 - )

  165.   Siegfried EISENSTÄDT (?, Schöneck -) & Doris

  166. As discussed above, it is not clear which of the five original Eisenstädt brothers was the father of Siegfried. However, it was common for people who were given Jewish names in the early 1800’s, to use more “German sounding” names, such as “Siegfried”, later in life. It is likely that Siegfried’s original name was something else. It is possible that he is the “Siemon Eisenstädt” listed as a son of Moses Eisenstädt, near the top of this list.

  167.   Benjamin EISENSTÄDT (17 October 1824, Schöneck - 28 December 1898, Putzig) & Emma BERNSTEIN (15 September 1823, Putzig - 19 October 1906, Putzig)

  172. It appears that the two brothers Moses and Louis, married two sisters, Hilda and Flora.

  178. -  Herrmann EISENSTÄDT (17 July 1860, Putzig - 7 December 1940, Lodz Ghetto - ) & Jenny EISACK (1862, Nakel/Netze - 16 September 1941, Lodz Ghetto)   See photo of Herrmann at right.

  179. The descendants of Herrmann Eisenstädt have had several reunions, the most recent one being in Berlin in May, 2010. Some members of this branch of the family are very internet-shy, so many members are not listed. Contact me for missing names.
